GENERAL INFORMATION:
Quincy Bay Terminal Company (QBT) is a shortline freight railroad providing rail services between Quincy Point and South Braintree, Massachusetts. Operating five days per week - with additional service provided on-demand - QBT interchanges with CSXT at South Braintree, thereby offering rail service connection to the entire North American continental railway system.
QBT operates the former Fore River Railroad under a license agreement with the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA). The Authority is responsible for providing water supply and wastewater collection and treatment for the City of Boston and forty-nine surrounding communities. One element of the wastewater treatment program is the conversion of residual products into a commercially marketable fertilizer pellet. The pelletizing facility is located in the Fore River Staging Area (formerly the Quincy Shipyard), for which QBT provides freight rail service. Pellets are shipped by rail to several locations within the continental United States.
In addition, Twin Rivers Technologies, a large manufacturing complex located at Quincy Point adjacent to the Staging Area, receives raw material inbound by rail and ships refined products, utilized in the manufacture of soaps, detergents, synthetic lubricants and dozens of other products.
The former Quincy Shipyard - now owned by Massachusetts Heavy Industries - is currently undergoing reconstruction and revitalization. QBT anticipates providing freight rail service supporting the construction of double-hull tankers in the near future.
QBT’s mainline is approximately two miles long between Quincy Point and East Braintree. QBT operates via trackage rights over MBTA/AMTRAK from East Braintree to South Braintree, another approximately 1 1/2 miles.
Employees of QBT are members of the United Transportation Union whose efforts to provide a safe and fulfilling work environment are fully supported by QBT management. QBT was the recipient of a "Jake" Award for safe operations during 1999, awarded by the American Shortline and Regional Railroad Association.
Building on the area’s economic, industrial heritage, Quincy Bay Terminal Company is committed to playing a vital role in strengthening the region’s economy by providing dependable, efficient, cost-effective and environmentally sound professional quality freight rail transportation services.
